How can you supplement IT infrastructure knowledge to make it complete?
Once the IT Asset Management process has been implemented in a company, the question naturally arises: how can we supplement IT infrastructure knowledge to ensure it is complete? The answer is simple — by implementing the CMDB process.
In a previous article, we described ITAM, which focused on inventorying IT assets within the organization. However, the created knowledge base must be expanded. A Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is a process designed to maintain an up-to-date and consistent database containing information about all configuration items (CIs) in the organization.
The OXARI CMDB system allows you to enter the required data according to a defined schema, which is essential for proper information flow. Additionally, consider implementing the Service Desk module, which, when integrated with CMDB, enables more effective incident management and technical support, significantly shortening response times.
Below are the main elements of the CMDB process:
- Identification and registration of configuration items (CI) – items such as servers, network devices, and software are identified and registered in the system.
- Categorization and classification of configuration items – each CI is categorized and classified based on criteria such as type, status, location, owner, and more.
- Establishing relationships between configuration items – CIs are connected relationally to form a coherent map of the organization’s infrastructure.
- Monitoring and updating configuration items – after the database is created, the CMDB process requires continuous monitoring and updating of CI information.
- Change management – the CMDB database is used to manage organizational changes, such as software updates, hardware replacements, and similar activities.
